Chapter 22

“Hey, wait a minute. Where’s K9? In spite of all this commotion goin’ on, I ain’t seen her. Have you seen her? Where is she?” Roger said.

“No need to worry. She greeted us with a growl and some suspicion, but when she saw me, everything was okay. I stroked her head and reassured her we were no threat. A couple of pieces of pulled pork helped, too. She’s not far. Didn’t want to get trampled underfoot with this crowd,” Pastor said.

“How about Donkey? Where’s he?”

“He looked us over carefully, decided we were benign, and last time I saw him, was headed for the perimeter of your property. Your four-legged security systems did not fail you.”

Roger said, “That’s good to know. Had me worried a little.” He paused. “Have you seen my cat?”

Pastor said, “I saw a streak that took off for the woods when we drove up. Didn’t get a good look at it, but I think it was a cat.”

“That sounds like her. Skittish and doesn’t like strangers or crowds. I figured she was okay, but was still worried about her.” He stopped and smiled. “I really want to thank you for doing this. You guys didn’t have to. I could afford to do it myself, but you’ve saved me countless hours of time gettin’ everything together. I don’t know how to thank you.”

“I believe you just did. We try to help where we can and who we can. This old world has a lot of needs.”

“But why me? Of all the people in this world, why me? Why do all these rotten things happen to me? And occasionally, something good, like you guys blessing me. Why me?”

“I think you’re asking a bigger question than what it appears.”

Roger said, “I am. You know some of my background, how I unfairly lost my professor’s job at the university and then my wife and son died in the auto accident. People have tried to kill me because I wanted to see justice done. Then I found out I have another son and then nearly lost him. My trailer’s damaged and then burns up, but I did get out along with my critters. And now you guys help me? Why me?”

Pastor said, “You’re asking a question people have asked for thousands of years, probably since the beginning of time. Have you considered Job?”|

“I thought you might mention him.”

“He wasn’t doing anything wrong; fact is he was doing everything right, and that’s what caused his problems and heartaches. Granted, we all suffer from outside influences. And some people suffer from their own actions and choices.”

Roger nodded. “Yes, got to agree with you about some pain being self-inflicted because of bad personal choices and those of family members. But what about those who suffer for no reason at all? What about them? Good people that suffer from cancer and illness? Blindness? Mental health issues? Why do they have to suffer? Why?”

“That’s a good question, Roger. This may come off as tripe, but it’s the only answer there is.
